Sawyer - Texas Children's Hospital

At about 10 months old we noticed two birthmarks appear on Sawyer. A large one on his foot and one on his thigh. At his one year appointment, I mentioned it to the pediatrician. She referred us to a dermatologist. When I called the dermatologist they said it would take a month and a half to get in. Within the next two weeks he got two more spots on his abdomen. I called the dermatologist back and they had us get in that week. It turns out he has Cafe Au Lait spots. These are sometimes symptoms of a neurological disorder called neurofibromatosis. So we were referred to a dermatologist at Texas Children's Hospital. Usually it takes 6-9 months to get an appointment, but our dermatologist called and found out they had an appointment in just two weeks. So we took it! The dermatologist was positive about everything. At this time Sawyer does not meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Which we already knew. But the problem with this disorder is that most symptoms don't appear until puberty. So we elected to have the genetic testing to rule out the disorder rather than sit, wait, and wonder about the symptoms. So in November we will return to Texas Children's for the genetic testing. Hopefully we will have definitive answers and can put our minds at ease! At the visit of course Sawyer was pleasant and all smiles! I think he actually had fun! He's quite the charmer! He told the nurse and doctor "thank you!".
